She Said To Me (the most recently released track from our album Global) has just been named The Coolest Song In The World This Week in Little Steven’s Underground Garage.
It can be heard on both SiriusXM (Channel 21) and on the syndicated terrestrial Little Steven’s Underground Garage weekly show on 200 FM stations in 130 major cities in the United States and abroad. In addition, SiriusXM subscribers have access to She Said To Me on Little Steven’s Coolest Songs In the World Channel (721) through the SiriusXM App, which is the place to hear of all the tracks that have been so designated over the last two decades.
Steven Van Zandt commented, “The Coolest Song In The World This Week” is our highest honor in the Underground Garage. The song will be played in old school heavy rotation six times a day. There is no airplay even close to that anywhere else in the Universe. We are the only format regularly playing new traditional rock ‘n’ roll; we have introduced over one thousand new bands in 20 years, but we are also the only format that plays artists from the ‘60s and ‘70s that release new records. We don’t care where you’re from, old or young, if it’s great, we’re gonna play it. And this one is great!”
Bob Cowsill, who wrote She Said To Me with his wife, Mary Jo, will be heard on this Friday’s (1/24/25) edition of Coolest Conversations on SiriusXM Ch. 21 hosted by air personality The Mighty Manfred, front man and driving force behind the garage rock band The Woggles. Presented by Hard Rock Cafe, guests have included Tom Petty, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett and Carlos Santana.
Global, which had been more of a rumor rather than a reality for the better part of three decades, is the stuff of rock ‘n’ roll legend: it was recorded at Rumbo Recorders in LA’s San Fernando Valley with the financial underwriting of a self-styled financier. Rumbo is the studio that had been established by Daryl Dragon, (“The Captain” of Captain & Tennille) and had over the years hosted sessions by a broad range of significant artists including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Guns N’ Roses, Fleetwood Mac and Megadeth. The Cowsills, who had decided to pursue the path of a contemporary band rather than as the “oldies” act that Dick Clark had hoped to promote, were left in the lurch when their financial backer was revealed to be a scam artist and was summarily arrested for insurance fraud. The funds for the Rumbo sessions were not forthcoming so the album’s master tapes were not accessible to the group due to the unpaid bill for the recording. They were on the cusp of being signed to Atlantic Records in the ‘90s when the label’s Chairman heard the Global tracks. When informed that the songs he so admired were by The Cowsills, the group whose output, dating back to the ‘60s, included such Top 40 hits as “The Rain, The Park and Other Things,” “Indian Lake” and “Hair” (which went all the way to #1), the signing offer was rescinded and the A&R staffer who championed their music was summarily fired. Their image and legacy were apparently deemed unhip, a sharp contrast to Van Zandt’s refreshingly ecumenical approach.
In recent years, a music video for She Said To Me was unearthed. It was directed and edited on VHS by Ryan Sexton, who captured the band’s verve and energy. Sexton also directed videos for Global tracks “Is It Any Wonder?” and “Some Good Years.” Though the release of Global was hung up, these videos actually screened in local movie theaters before the feature film. According to Bob Cowsill, “The budget for these was non-existent. Ryan used the band to hone his talent on, and we in turn received three promotional videos at no cost for an album that wouldn’t come out until many years later. Somehow, it all made sense.”
