Can You Love?

Talk strange make-up's the same
Fancy clothes rainbow colors
Inside humans reside
Crying to one another
Living hide-away lives
Shelter in towns and cities
Point out shout "there they are"
Everyone smiles "how pretty."
If only they wouldn't
Hate themselves or their cross
Could we all learn to love
A man who is lost
Trying hard to survive
Moral and social standards
Some pay prices too high
Easy to give in to branders
If only they wouldn't hate
Themselves or their cross
Could we all learn to love
A man who is lost
Some die others will cry
Just isn't worth fighting for
If only they wouldn't hate
Themselves or their cross
Could we all learn to love
A man who is lost
If only they wouldn't hate
Themselves or their cross
A question was posed as to what this song is really about and here is Bob's answer:
There was a movie called "The Boys In The Band" back then about being gay. It
was actually a lousy movie but the whole attitude of these gay people in the movie was so
archaic by today's standards ... they were having a rough go of it back then ... they felt
lost, as if their homosexuality was a giant cross to bear ... a lot of the lyrics came
right out of that movie ... the whole hating themselves, hating their "cross",
feeling totally lost in the real world ... it was a totally down experience. Although I
didn't care for the movie, I thought the challenges they were presenting to us
"normal" folk were worth writing about. This was before the "Gay
Pride" movement ... everything was closet-oriented and everyone in this movie was
miserable about it. So the main message of the song is that we're all just humans on the
inside ... but we'll all be challenged by what's presented on the outside and do we have
the ability to crack the exterior and get inside to see if there's anything there that
might be worth pursuing ... a lot of us stop short of that and miss out on things.
